Another factor to consider when choosing a mechanical pencil lead is the hardness. Levels of pencil hardness range from 9B to 9H. The most common type of pencil lead hardness is known as HB. This is the medium level hardness found in the No. 2 pencils that are used by most students and educators. There are also other levels of lead hardness that are made for use by artists. Typically, a soft lead makes the darkest lines, while the harder types make lighter lines.
